about

The raw, spontaneous and organic approach of 'Home Movie' harnesses the 70s country-rock of Neil Young, the alt. country sensibilities of Whiskeytown and 'Heartbreaker' era Ryan Adams as well as elements of Bob Dylan & The Band's 'Basement Tape Sessions', early Beatles, 'Exile' era Stones and Gram Parsons.

'Home Movie' was conceived thematically out of the desire to escape hard times stemming from the upheaval left by divorced parents and failed relationships for the adventure of the North American continent. Mat draws from and projects the lost idealism of his rural Herefordshire upbringing onto this dream for escape which has the effect of painfully blurring uncomfortable past memories with naive new dreams.

Mat became involved in the UK Americana scene when he moved to London in 2005 to study at Roehampton University. Mat met country/rock guitarist Dominic Keshavarz (now Goldheart Assembly) and made plans to form a band with friends Robert Hann (bass) and Tom Scheponik (pedal steel/organ) of Gringo Motel. 'Home Movie' was recorded in January and April 2006 at Jesse Honig's Miriam Audio studio in Philadelphia with the help of Mat's cousin Daniel King (guitar).

'Home Movie' (2006) reached the top ten of the Americana UK album chart in August 2006 but Mat's decision to quit music to focus on his studies in 2007 meant that the album never reached a wider audience.

Mat features on the recent Clubhouse Records compilation 'Divided By A Common Language: Vol. 1 - A collection of UK Americana' which has had impressive reviews in The Sunday Times, The Sun and UNCUT Magazine. Released on March 15, 2010, the compilation has garnered a lot of interest in the British music press and has put British Americana and Alt. Country well and truly on the music map.
