Oh! Where's the spark? In this hardened purple heart You've opened up to leave your mark on Just close up when you're done. It feels so long Since I said bye on the phone And wound up back here on the other side Where the ghost was born All this healing cannot stop The empty feelings in the dark But you hope. You hope. Time! Drink up. Say goodbye but don't get up I'll be back before the dawn And when the morning comes All you thought we had in common Turns to dust in your hands In your hands, in your hands.

Thieves run amok Broke down trucks The belly opened up The heart ripped out Thieves survive, rely On the bones and the scraps of meat That are keeping us alive Grab your things and say goodbye This ain't a warning its a battle cry There's a fever in our eyes Bulbs expire, retire Civilians open fire... Thieves survive, rely On the bones and the scraps of meat That are keeping them alive Grab your things and say goodbye This ain't a warning its a battle cry Maybe the fever in our eyes One day will subside

As Woody said, "It takes a worried man to sing a worried song" We've all been on the rails Struggling just to hold on When you feel left for dead When every glimmer of hope is gone Don't fall or trip Take another dip into the dark well of sorrow It's hard to take a hit When you know the worst is still to come But the worst of it, is the feeling you've hit the bottom Try to smile a bit Take the load off Don't fall or trip Take another dip into the dark well of sorrow Where there's no hope Just the thickening smoke If you've been there, you'll know

Belly Up 02:44
Wish me goodnight In a bunker near Barstow Turn out the artificial light, til tomorrow Time has stood still Since we took all we can borrow I'll take a sleeping pill And dream of tomorrow All the lizards lie Belly up, in the furrow Looks of surprise And eternal sorrow Some traipse the desert In the emptiness and the hollow Full of greed and regret Others follow Lie with me tonight Belly up, til the blues go I won't be surprised if you say no There's a picture on the wall Of a simple man and a silo To remind us all How the tune goes

Kill TV 03:41
Man caught in the crosshairs Man caught in the crosshairs On KILL TV A faceless victim Not a celebrity When the missile fired Were you excited? Were you full of pride? Or just undecided? I don't know About you. I don't know Man caught in the crossfire Man caught in the crossfire On KILL TV An innocent victim Such a tragedy When the missile fired Were you excited? Were you full of pride? Or just undecided? I don't know About you. I don't know About me.

For Ma 04:23
Sing me the words To the most beautiful song And i'll put them in a box And send them to my Ma And the tales that you tell Will spin her out of her spell Cause there's times when all you need is a song Sing of the good old days Back on the farm The chimney smoke dream That feels so long gone Where the ghost of her father Wouldn't dare come closer Than the outside porch in the yard Now i'm sitting here drinking Endless bottles of wine There's a comfort i've found But I ain't got much time I feel another ghost rising This time the soul is mine I don't think I can leave her alone I don't think I can leave her alone Sing of the midnight Where my dreams came from When she'd sit on my bed And sing me a song With her red wine breath Her perfume and dress Made me feel like the luckiest man Hours pass by when I think of my Ma How all the men in her life Always left her alone And she's trying so hard To hang on to the one that she's got That it's taking its toll Now i'm sitting here drinking Endless bottles of wine There's a comfort i've found But I ain't got much time I feel another ghost rising This time the soul is mine I don't think I can leave her alone I don't think I can leave her alone

Water Bomber 10:24

about

I recorded this album in an old pump house near Shepperton on the Thames where my Dad lives, harnessing the natural sound of the large open space.

With the help of some friends I tried to capture a sonic depth experimenting with various room mics and reverbs. Most of the songs were written within weeks of the session except for 'For Ma' which was written way back in 2006.

Despite its short length I think 'Long Goner' has a thematic quality which matches its predecessors. The 'dark' elements of the album are obvious but there is a thematic link to both 'Forest Fire' and 'Home Movie'.
